If you would like to arrange a day to visit the site, or sign up as a volunteer to help us with the excavation and artifact washing, please contact us using the form provided!
All of the tools necessary to participate will be provided; all you need to come work on the site is a good pair of shoes (sneakers are just fine!), a hat (we're in direct sunlight, most of the time), and a water bottle (stay hydrated!). Wear clothes that you don't mind getting dirty, preferably lighter fabric and colors because it tends to get hot in the sun, and make sure to bring sunscreen (I will always, always have some to spare, as those of you that have worked with me may remember). Another good item to bring is a pair of gardening gloves, if you have some to spare, though I will have several extra pairs for people to use at the site.
Archaeology is hard work, but it is a lot of fun at the same time. Activities will include actual excavation -- digging with shovels and trowels, pushing the dirt through screens while looking for artifacts, helping to carry buckets -- as well as artifact washing -- using toothbrushes to clean the dirt from the artifacts and then sorting and bagging them, a good way to get out of the sun for a bit since we'll have a tent for this. Volunteers of all ages are welcome, and experience is not necessary! I will provide whatever instruction is needed in order to participate in each aspect of the work.
Any level of participation, from a single day to every day that we're out there, is completely welcome!
Thank you for contacting us about volunteering at Timbuctoo this summer. We will get back to you as soon as possible!
